I believe you learn to write by writing. And the best way to learn the craft of playwriting, I have found, is to go through a developmental process that includes working with a director and actors. To that end, I produce an annual new 10-minute play festival -- Fringe Fest. Each of my Introduction to Playwriting students is placed with a director and a cast. They revise for a week, as rehearsals are taking place. At the end of that time, each play receives a staged reading in front of an audience.
